why do radio broadcasters use those giant microphones?
most people now in the broadcast industry use small microphones that hook to thier lapel, or other smaller desk or stand mics. why do radio DJ's and others insist on those giant EV dynamic mics?
Unless an announcer has perfect mike technique, the sound gathered by a lapel microphone for example will change when someone looks up, down left... same with smaller microphones, to a degree.
The (pick-up) pattern on smaller microphones can now be enhanced by compressors and other gadgets. LARGE microphones were used in the past to help the sound of the announcer if he or she moved an inch or two and because the guts of the mike were not as small as they are these days.
My other answer, part one: Many people dont want hidden microphones. They like the looks of mikes such as "giant EV..." and look at the Shure SM7. This mike has been around for decades and people are still buying them! (Robin Quivers of the Howard Stern Show still uses one)
Part 2: Why buy new technology when the old still works? Some of the small mikes are very $$
