Can I change the power supply for the Dell Studio XPS 9000?
The Studio XPS 9000 only comes with a 475w power supply yet the specs for the ATI Radeon HD 5870 (which is one of the options) require a min 500w and I may wish to upgrade my graphics card later and know that 475w will limit me, so is it posible to replace it or is there some reason, case, motherboard..etc that I can't?
I'd be surprised if they shipped a 475w supply with a 5870. That's just asking for trouble. Theoretically it would still run fine but I wouldn't like to test that assumption with such a high priced card. Depends on what other components you use.
Replacing the power supply is easy and they're basically all universal. The quality of the supply has a large bearing though. A 600w one from Corsair for example will give significantly better power and better quality of power than a budget 600w brand.
